Abstract

Several cities at the international and local levels have adopted the green urbanism approach to reach sustainable communities in the environmental, economic, social and institutional sectors due to the challenges of high pollution rates and non-optimal exploitation of natural resources, energy and water, especially with the increase in urban expansion and high rates of development in many cities. The application of the green urbanism approach was based on a set of indicators developed by a number of international programs such as LEED, BREEAM, CASBEE, Green star, the United Nations indicators of city prosperity and the indicators of EBRD Green Cities Program.
At the local level, the Egyptian government has recently taken an interest in applying the principles of green urbanism in new cities through the formation some institutions such as the Sustainable Cities Unit and the Egyptian Council of Green Building and Sustainable Cities. . Therefore this paper aims to formulate suitable framework for implementing the green urbanism approach in developing new Egyptian cities by using EBRD program. This comes through two main axes, namely, a review of previous studies, experiences and international reports on green urbanism and its indicators, especially the indicators of EBRD, in addition to the axis of studying and evaluating Six October city according to green city indicators by Geographical information (GIS) and remote sensing technology to identify the gap and the challenges that the city faces.
