Abstract

Adding sensors and actuators to machine elements will make them more active and useful, but what if these elements will be added to machine elements manufactured of composite materials? In this study a presentation of evidences supporting this idea was presented and generalized to include all machine elements in order to be smart. For more confidence a mathematical model of the most popular engineering element namely beam is implemented with wires of SMA, Nitinol, and solved with the finite element method. The results showed how the beam isn't degraded and still retains its strength. The advantages of this idea are focused mainly on the quality enhancement as well as prewarning failure. Section 1, various researchers' studies were presented concerning adding smartness to mechanical elements. In section 2, evidences supporting the idea were outlined. Section 3 showed the analysis of the mathematical model and analyzing of results was explained. In section 4, discussion and conclusions were presented.
